IDF unit — Israeli Air Force (חיל האוויר): pilots' course (kurs tayis), air defense / Iron Dome operators, UAV operators, aircraft technicians — requirements, service length, olim eligibility
The Air Force is a whole branch, not one unit. Conscripts serve in four broad tracks. Beret: grey (Air Force blue-grey).
1. Pilots’ course (kurs tayis)
- What: about 3 years at Hatzerim (five stages: four of six months, then a year), graduating as a lieutenant with a BA from Ben-Gurion University. Tracks: fighter, transport, helicopter, and (separate) navigator/WSO.
- Requirements: profile 97 with excellent uncorrected vision and no color blindness; very high kaba/DAPAR; passing a multi-stage screening (gibush tayis) that starts by invitation from Tzav Rishon results; top-level security clearance; strong Hebrew. Open to men and women.
- Service: graduates owe about 7 years of career service after the course — roughly 9–10 years total.
- Olim: legally eligible as citizens, but in practice the security clearance and Hebrew bar mean the course is realistic mainly for olim who arrived as children or teenagers. Adult olim with dual citizenship from sensitive countries are rarely cleared. Ask at the Tzav Rishon whether you were flagged for the screening; NBN’s Lone Soldiers Program can enquire.
2. Air Defense Array (Hagana Avirit / Ma’arach HaHagana HaAvirit)
- What: the combat branch that operates Iron Dome, David’s Sling, Arrow and Patriot batteries and radar stations — interceptor operators, battery crews, detection and control. Operators have been continuously in action since 2023.
- Requirements: profile 72 historically; from September 2026 the new profile 70 also qualifies. No gibush; request on the manila. Mixed-gender — many operators are women. Hebrew: functional; radio and control-room work is in Hebrew, so olim usually pass through Michve Alon first.
- Training: ~4 months basic + a ~4-month operator course for Iron Dome.
- Service: men 32 months; women in the combat operator track 32 months.
- Olim: a common combat placement for olim with a mid-range profile, and one of the few combat tracks open to women at profile 70–72. Bases are spread around the country; shifts are long but structured.
3. UAV / drone operators (Mafilei Katbam)
- What: remotely piloting the Air Force’s medium and large drones (Hermes, Heron) from ground stations; some tracks are considered aircrew.
- Requirements: high DAPAR, profile 64+, good English (systems and manuals), security clearance; selection via screening days. Some tracks require keva.
- Olim: attractive to olim with technical background and good English; clearance again is the practical hurdle.
4. Technical and support roles
Aircraft mechanics, avionics and weapons technicians, air-traffic control, meteorology, intelligence, logistics, and the Air Force technical school tracks. Profile from 45–64 upward depending on role; DAPAR and English weigh heavily; some long courses require signing extra time. Olim with English and technical skills are well placed here, and the qualifications map onto civilian aviation jobs.

Olim arriving at 22–27: 18 months non-combat / 24 months combat minimum, but long-course tracks are generally closed to soldiers who cannot commit longer.
