What it is

Nahal is the 933rd Brigade, an infantry brigade formed in 1982. Its name is the acronym of Noar Halutzi Lohem (“Fighting Pioneer Youth”) — a 1948 program that combined army service with founding kibbutzim and agricultural settlement. Today the brigade is a regular infantry brigade filled mostly by ordinary draftees, but it keeps the tradition of garinim — groups of youth-movement members who serve together — and a social/educational flavour. Motto: “The human advantage.”

• Beret: light green (soldiers are nicknamed “sticklights”). Black boots.
• Battalions: 50th “Bazelet”, 931st “Shaham”, 932nd “Granit”, and the 934th Reconnaissance Battalion (Gadsar Nahal: Palsar, Palhan, Orev).
• Sectors: rotates across all fronts — Gaza, Lebanon, Judea & Samaria.

Brigade vs. track

• Nahal Brigade = the combat infantry unit described here.
• Nahal track / garin Nahal = a service model in which a youth-movement group does a year of community work (Shnat Sherut or the older “pereḳ meshek” kibbutz period) alongside a shorter military portion. Garin members often, but not always, serve in the Nahal Brigade. Ask Meitav specifically if you mean the track.

Requirements

• Medical profile: minimum 82.
• Gibush: none for the regular battalions — request via the manila. Gadsar Nahal is entered through Gibush Yachatiot.
• Hebrew: no formal score; olim with a Hebrew score of 6 or below do Michve Alon first and can then be placed in Nahal.
• Gender: male-only combat battalions.

Path in and training

1. List Nahal on the manila. Garin members are assigned as a group.
2. Draft to the Nahal training base in the Negev (Bach Nahal at Arad). Standard infantry maslul: about 4 months basic + 4 months advanced (~8 months), including rifle, urban warfare, navigation, and long marches; ends with a beret march and the light-green beret.
3. Operational service in a battalion, with specialist and command courses open afterwards.

Service length

• 32 months for male combat soldiers.
• Olim arriving at 22–27 who volunteer for combat: 24 months minimum.
• Reserve duty afterwards.

For olim

• Garin Tzabar, the main program for overseas Jews who make aliyah to serve as lone soldiers, historically sends many of its members to Nahal (though today garin members are spread across all combat units). The garin lives together on a kibbutz, which solves housing and support for lone soldiers.
• Nahal’s group culture makes it one of the easier brigades for an oleh to find community in; many garinim include olim.
• Requirements are the same as Golani/Givati (82, no gibush), so it is a realistic request for most combat-eligible olim.
